We spend a lot of time preparing, designing, testing, refining our website, and our clients websites as well. What may take weeks, or months, can be undone in a few minutes by a skilled hacker. How? If your WordPress website is not secure, they can gain access through outdated code and vulnerabilities.
With WordPress being widely used as a website platform, it stands to reason that any plugins will be checked to see if they can provide access to a system. Without regular updates and maintenance, a website will over time, become vulnerable to new attacks and outdated security measures.
How can we secure a WordPress website?
There are different ways to secure a website. WordPress now has 2FA (two factor authentication) enabled on all their users accounts. By enabling 2FA on your website access, you provide an extra layer of security and confidence that your website is secure.
Have you ever tried to login to AWS console? You enter your login, you enter their secure scrambled code, then you enter your password, and finally you enter your 2FA code. Easy? No. Secure? Yes.
Another way to secure your WordPress website is by installing plugins specifically designed to secure your site. The two plugins we are using at the moment are Wordfence and Defender.
Wordfence is a great plugin. It is really feature rich and there are so many ways you can adjust it to your personal preferences. Our favourite part of the plugin is the clear recommendations provided, even in the free version of the plugin. If you want a plugin that provides depth of knowledge and confidence through security, Wordfence is the way to go.
Another equally impressive plugin is Defender. Their dashboard and security recommendations make it so simple to protect and secure your website, you’ll be questioning if you need an IT department anymore.
Where should we start?
You can install either one of the plugins above, or any other security plugin for your site that looks like it does the job. But that is only one solution to improving your WordPress website security.
